A/N: Written for kh_drabble Challenge [304] Starting Over. Because Max Goof needs to be a part of Kingdom Hearts, for real. Forgive any roughness, it's been ages...

He’s been pacing the deserted corridor for nearly an hour now, still caught halfway between escape and obligation. More than once he’s walked purposefully to the door only to turn around as a wave of sickness washed over him before he could open it.

“What should I do, dad?” Max asks. The question echoes quietly through the corridor until the silence swallows it up.

He sighs as his fingers close tightly around the medal lying heavy in his pocket. It was a condolence from the King, pressed into his hand after he had stopped screaming, after he had crumbled to his knees and sobbed into Mickey’s coat.

His father hadn’t been claimed by the Darkness, the King told him. He died a hero’s death, sacrificing himself to save others, which Max supposed was meant to be a comfort, even though it wasn’t. He stopped listening after that and broke down in front of his King, who held him as he cried.

Now all Max has left is the medal of valour with his father’s name on it, and the pity of the entire kingdom for the son of the dead Captain.

Max isn’t certain of much anymore, but he does know that he has grown tired of grief. His need to do something is what brought him to the King’s door. The fear churning inside him is stopping him from going in.

He tries to think of what his dad would say now. He thinks it would be something cheesy like, Just remember, Maxie, you’re my son and I’ll always be proud of you. No matter what.

The thought is enough to put a small smile on his lips, and before he even realises, he has taken a few steps toward the door. He exhales deeply, puts his hand on the doorknob. “Well, here goes everything, dad…”

As Max walks into the room, King Mickey looks up from his desk. “Oh, Max,” he says, a bit surprised, “Are you alright? Can I help you with anything?”

Max walks slowly to the King’s desk and looks him in the eye. “Uh, yes, actually, Your Majesty. I’d like to take my father’s place as Captain of the Royal Knights.”
